Hibrkraft's Plain Lab

Books that state their own measurements.

Plain Lab is Hibrkraft's printed-book line: agendas, planners, journals, notebooks and logbooks. Sewn in signatures at the same bindery as our leather journals, in Bogor.

Five Plain Lab books on a wooden desk beside a window. Security Patrol Book 2027, Maintenance Calendar 2027 and Dotted Notebook 4 mm stand against the wall; Daily Agenda 2027 lies across Site Diary 2027. To the right an open dotted notebook carries a handwritten list for the day, with a pen resting on it.

rulings

Almost no notebook seller states its ruling pitch. They write "lined" or "dotted" and stop there, so the only way to find out whether your handwriting fits is to buy one first.

These books come off an engine that knows its own geometry, so every product page states the figures: the pitch in millimetres and points, how many rows that yields at this trim, the signature count, and the spine thickness. The same numbers are printed on the last leaf of the book itself.

One ruling gives different line counts at different sizes. College ruling at 7.14 mm gives 24 lines on A5 and 21 on 5 × 7 inches. That is not a small detail if you write by hand every day.

The numbers

One ruling, two sizes, two line counts.

This is the thing no seller states, and the only thing you can check yourself once the book arrives.

Same pitch, smaller page. Not a rounding — computed from each book's own geometry and printed on its last leaf.

The table above, moving: two trims drawn at one scale, so the gap between the rules is the same on screen because it is the same on paper.
