Five lines, repeated: that is what a stave is, and everything written for it depends on the distance between one line and the next holding steady. At 2.47 millimetres, seventy lines fit the page before the margin closes it off, gathered five at a time into the staves themselves.

One hundred ten pages carry that ruling, the larger part of the book, behind a single divider. A shorter run of plain lined pages follows for lyrics, a fingering note, or anything else that does not sit on a stave.

The staves do not compose anything. They wait, evenly spaced, for whatever gets put on them, and a page left blank at the end of the week is exactly as ruled as one that is full.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

Real pages

Five pages from the Manuscript Notebook shown as cards: cover, divider, a stave-ruled page, a lined notes page, and a pen test page.
Five pages from the print file: the cover, a section divider, a stave page, a lined notes page, and the pen test leaf. The pitch between one stave and the next has to hold from the top of the page to the bottom, or a chord written on line forty stops lining up with the one on line one.
