The difference
Sewn versus glued
A factory book's spine is glued. The glue hardens, then cracks, and pages begin to come away — usually just when the book is full and has become worth something.
Waxed thread sewn through the folds of the paper does not have that problem. The book opens flat on the table, and it can still be resewn decades from now if it needs to be.
