Materials

Leather and paper

A selection of genuine leathers in several colours and textures

Leather

Full grain is the outermost layer of the hide: the pores and the texture are left as they are, and it is the only leather that develops a patina — a colour that deepens after years of use. Pull up is processed with oil or wax, so its colour lightens at every fold and scratch. Vegtan is vegetable-tanned — cowhide, with tannins from plants. Crazy horse and chrome-tanned are available too. For anyone avoiding animal materials altogether there is plant-based vegan leather: a different material, not a tanned hide. PU premium remains available on a tight budget — it is plastic, and we do not call it vegan.

Colours held in stock: cognac, dark brown, black, navy blue, forest green, burgundy, tan and natural. A colour outside those can be arranged for a corporate order.

Sheets of kraft paper stacked before cutting

Paper

Ruled, plain, dotted or grid. Acid-free, so your writing does not fade along with the page.

Gramaturnya 80 to 120 gsm: 80 if you write a lot and want the book to stay thin, 120 if you use a fountain pen or watercolour and do not want the ink coming through. In ivory for a classic look, bright white for maximum contrast, or recycled paper. For a particular requirement we can print the contents to order — a calendar, a letterhead, tables, or a layout of your own.

Anatomy

Four parts, none of them accidental

Leather cover
Chosen from leathers that will develop a character of their own — a light scratch settles into the patina rather than becoming a flaw.
The paper inside
Ruled, plain, dotted, grid, or a layout you set yourself. Acid-free.
Hand sewing
A saddle stitch through the folded signatures, done one at a time, not machine-glued.
Personalisation
Deboss, emboss, foil, laser engraving or screen printing — for a name, initials or a logo.

Size

The size is yours to set, not picked off a shelf

The ISO standard is the easiest starting point to picture, and A5 (15 × 21 cm) is the most ordered. But size is not a closed list: if the book has to fit a suit pocket, an archive shelf, or a gift box you already have, we cut to that measurement. The Rp 5.000 note in both diagrams is there for scale.

Series A. A7 and A6 for a pocket, A5 for daily work, A4 for a visitors’ book or a portfolio.

Series B. A little wider than the A series at the same height — chosen when the contents are full of tables.

The size guide compares them all side by side

The process

Four steps, no more

  1. 01ConsultationTell us what you need. We ask back about the quantity, the deadline, and what the book is for.
  2. 02Digital proofYou see what the result will look like before anything is cut. Revise until it fits, and only then does production begin.
  3. 03Made by handThe leather is cut, sewn and finished one at a time by an artisan, not by a machine.
  4. 04ShippedAnywhere in Indonesia. It has also reached the UAE, Malaysia, Canada and Germany.

Digital proof

Before there is a book, there is a drawing

Step 02 above reads like a promise until you see what it looks like. These are the working drawings for My Very Own Planner (2017): every non-standard part is drawn and named first, approved by the client, and only then is the material cut. What gets discussed at this stage is not the cover colour but whether there is a pocket, where it sits, and how deep it is.

A working drawing of the front cover of My Very Own Planner, annotated with the rubber strap and the reusable packaging
The cover. The elastic retaining strap, and a belly band designed so the packaging gets used rather than thrown straight away.

The front sleeve. A single angled pocket behind the front cover, for loose paper not yet transferred.
A working drawing of the accordion pocket in the back cover of My Very Own Planner
The back pocket. An accordion design, so it can expand — for the receipts and business cards that pile up.

A drawing like this is what you receive at step 02. Revisions happen here, while changing something still costs no more than erasing a line.

Construction

Why it is sewn, not glued

White waxed thread hand-stitching joining a black and a tan leather cover, with a metal snap fastener

Saddle stitch

A factory book has a glued spine, and glue cracks. Ours is hand-sewn using saddle stitch through the folded signatures — the same method used by the world’s best leather bag makers. The book opens flat on a desk and lasts decades without pages coming loose.

A spool of black waxed thread on the binding bench

Waxed thread

The thread is waxed, so the stitching does not fray and stays tight after years of opening and closing. The thread colour is among the things you can choose, and on some books the stitching is deliberately left visible as a detail rather than hidden.

Comparing

A printed notebook and a sewn notebook are not the same thing

Both are legitimate, for different jobs. If what you need is a thousand books for a seminar next week, a printed notebook is the answer. This table is so that you know what you are comparing.

Personalisation

A name, initials, or a logo

A metal plate for debossing a logo, held in the hand above a wooden bench

Deboss and emboss

Debossing presses the logo into the leather; embossing raises it out. Both use a metal plate cut specifically for your design — the one in this photograph is one of them.

Two leather covers with a company logo in gold foil

Foil, laser, screen printing

Gold, silver or rose gold foil if the logo has to read from a distance. Laser engraving for fine lines, screen printing for full colour. If you have the logo file, that is enough to start.

Every logo needs its own plate

Deboss and emboss are not printed — they are pressed, with a brass or steel plate cut specifically for one design. The plate is made once and then kept by us, so a repeat order next year produces exactly the same impression. Four from our collection, photographed as they lie on the bench.

Logos and names. The petals and the lettering are cut as a single block.

The crest. A line this fine demands brass, not a soft plate.

Raised lettering. Pressing a name into the leather as deep as the fibre.
A used metal deboss plate with reversed lettering and the marks of use on its face
Already in use. The marks of work on its face; an old plate stays precise.

All the lettering on the plate reads backwards. It is meant to — what appears in the leather is its mirror image.

Leather planners

Planners and notebooks, sewn the same way

The only difference is the inside. A notebook is blank and waiting for you; a planner already has the dates, the letterhead, or the tables printed to your year and your office’s needs. The cover, the leather, the sewing and the personalisation are exactly the same — including corporate planners running to hundreds. The ISO sizes, the choice of contents, the prices and the lead times are set out on the custom leather planner page.

Not sure of the size yet? Size guide sets them side by side. For an office order, corporate gifting menjelaskan alurnya.

Stitching

The thread shows because it really is sewn

A factory book has a glued spine, and glue cracks. Ours is hand-sewn through the folded signatures with waxed thread, so the stitching does not fray and stays tight after years of opening and closing. The thread colour is among the things you can choose.

The film comes from our own server — this page contacts nobody to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A custom notebook for Chef Works. 52 seconds.

Chef Works ordered custom notebooks from this workshop. This is footage of the work.

We keep the logo plate. So if you order again next year, the same logo needs no new plate — and that is the one up-front cost on a corporate order that does not recur.

Limits, and being straight about them

Three things other suppliers rarely write down

Sizes: from 3×2 cm to 60×40 cm

There is no list of sizes you have to choose from. The smallest we have made is 3 × 2 cm, the largest 60 × 40 cm. Anywhere between the two, just give us the figures.

The logo plate is yours

Every logo needs its own plate, made once. That plate belongs to the customer, not to us — we only store it, clearly labelled so it is neither mixed up nor forgotten, with no time limit. Many repeat customers use theirs again: the same logo needs no new plate.

Sometimes we say you do not need custom at all

If what you actually need is already in the catalogue, we say so and point you there. Custom adds time and cost; if that addition buys you nothing, there is no sense in our selling it.

A maroon leather journal with a tie, the Dinas Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif logo debossed on the front cover

An example

Dinas Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif

This is what we mean by “you do not need custom”. The book is an existing model — vegetable-tanned leather, cross-stitching on the spine, deckled paper edges, a tie closure. All that was added is their logo, debossed on the front cover.

Nothing had to be designed from scratch, there was no new tooling beyond the logo plate, and it took far less time than building a new model. The result still looks like theirs.

One-offs and bulk

One book, or ten thousand

No minimum order. One book as a gift goes through the same sequence as two thousand for an office — the same material, the same sewing, each one inspected. For hand-sewn books the workshop’s capacity is around 2,000 books a month, and that is a limit we set ourselves so the quality does not drop.

That figure can be exceeded, but not in the same way. Our largest order was ten thousand books in three weeks — the binding was deliberately made simpler, and extra hands came from the pool of artisans we can call on. Not outsourced to a factory. If you have a quantity and a date, just say so; we will tell you up front what is reasonable and what is not.

Price

It depends what you want

Two different things. Catalogue — books already made and ready to ship — sit in the range Rp 55.000 – Rp 150.000 per book. Custom orders is made from scratch for you, and the price follows the material, the size, the personalisation technique and the quantity.

If you would rather buy through a marketplace, the ready-to-ship catalogue is also on our Tokopedia shop — 3,779 books sold there, with a rating of 4.8 from 350 reviews.

Questions

The questions we are asked most

Which materials are available?
Genuine leather — full grain, pull up, vegtan, crazy horse, chrome tanned — and premium PU. If you have material of your own, we can work with it.
Can I choose the paper?
You can. Ruled, plain, dotted or grid. The paper is acid-free, and for a particular requirement we can prepare printed contents to order.
How is this different from a factory notebook?
A factory book has a glued spine, and glue cracks. Ours is sewn with waxed thread through the folded signatures, so it opens flat on a desk and lasts far longer.
What personalisation is there?
A name, initials or a logo. The techniques are deboss, emboss, foil (gold, silver or rose gold), laser engraving, or screen printing.
Can I see the design before production?
Yes — that is the second step. We do not cut anything before you have approved the digital proof.
What is the minimum order?
There is no minimum. We will make a single copy.
How long does it take?
A single piece usually takes 3–7 working days; 50–200 pcs around 7 working days. If you are working to a date, say so at the start.
Do you ship abroad?
We do. We have shipped to the UAE, Malaysia, Canada and Germany.
Will the journal last?
A sewn spine does not depend on glue, so there is no joint that can crack and release the pages. The leather ages in the right direction — the more it is used, the
Can it be a birthday, wedding or keepsake gift?
It can, and we will make a single copy. A name or a date on the cover is usually what makes the difference.
Do you take corporate orders?
We do. Office books, event souvenirs, client gifts, yearly planners — the route and the options are on for business.
How do I order?
Four steps: tell us what you need, receive a digital proof, we make it, then it ships. Nothing is cut before you approve the proof.
Is there a guarantee?
Twelve months from the date the book is received, for manufacturing defects. The detail is on the guarantee page.
How do I care for a leather journal?
Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from excessive damp. Wipe it with a dry cloth; occasionally give it a leather conditioner. A light scratch settles into the patina rather than becoming a flaw.
