A standard printed stave is sized for a hand that already knows where a note sits without looking. A beginner's pencil is wider than that gap allows, and a child's is wider still, so the note ends up guessed at rather than placed.

Here the five lines of the stave sit 3.53 millimetres apart, wider than a standard printed stave, with forty-nine rows fitting down the page at that spacing. The extra room is for the note head itself, drawn by a hand still working out where it actually goes.

It is not sized for a professional copyist's hand, and it was never meant to be.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Wide-Stave Music Notebook shown as cards: a wide stave page, a section divider, a conversion table, a world map page, and the pen test page.
Five pages rendered straight from the print file: a wide stave, a section divider, the conversion tables, the world map page, and the pen test leaf at the back. Every stave line is vector geometry, holding its edge at any zoom instead of thinning into a smudge.
Specification card for the Wide-Stave Music Notebook listing 110 stave pages, 3.53 mm pitch, 49 rows, 120 pages total, A5 trim.
One hundred and ten pages of five-line staves at 3.53 mm, forty-nine rows to the page, wider than a standard printed stave. Ten pages of reference close the book: an owner page, conversion tables, and emergency numbers checked against two independent sources.
