Genko yoshi replaces the running line with a grid of boxes, one character to a cell. The pitch runs 9.17 mm, eighteen rows to the page. The box does something a ruled line cannot: it holds the character to a fixed size instead of letting it grow or shrink across a line.

The cells do not care which script goes inside them. Kanji, kana, Hangul practised stroke by stroke, or a Latin hand drilled for consistency all sit inside the same box the same way. What the grid enforces is proportion, not language.

A box does not correct a stroke order or a proportion by itself. It only gives the same box back every time, so a mistake stays visible instead of drifting off the page unnoticed.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Genko Yoshi Notebook laid out as cards: a genko grid page, a conversion table, an emergency page, a world map page, and the pen test page.
Five pages rendered straight from the print file: the character grid, a conversion table, the emergency page, the world map, and the pen test leaf at the back. The cell is the product. A box drawn a fraction too small crowds every stroke that follows it.
Specification card for the Genko Yoshi Notebook listing 109 grid pages, 9.17 mm cell pitch, 18 rows, 120 pages total, A5 trim.
One hundred and nine pages ruled into fixed character cells, eighteen to a row, at a 9.17 mm pitch. Eleven pages of reference furniture: conversion tables computed from definitions, emergency numbers checked against two independent sources, and the pen test leaf at the back. A5, 120 pages, 6.86 mm across the spine.
