The layout does not teach a system of abbreviation; it only gives a fast hand somewhere narrow enough to keep pace with speech rather than transcribe it after the fact.
A column this narrow changes how a line gets used. Long words wrap early or get abbreviated by whoever is writing, and the centre rule stops a line from drifting the full width of the page while a speaker is still talking. What method fills the columns is not printed here and never was.
