A single rule runs down the centre of the page, splitting it into two narrow columns rather than one wide one. Lines cross both columns at 7.06 mm, twenty-four to a page. The layout does not teach a system of abbreviation; it only gives a fast hand somewhere narrow enough to keep pace with speech rather than transcribe it after the fact.

A column this narrow changes how a line gets used. Long words wrap early or get abbreviated by whoever is writing, and the centre rule stops a line from drifting the full width of the page while a speaker is still talking. What method fills the columns is not printed here and never was.

The rule divides the page. Learning what to put in each column is still on you.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Shorthand Notebook laid out as cards: a two-column ruled page, a section divider, a conversion table, an emergency page, and a sample marked page.
Five pages rendered from the print file: a two-column ruled page, a divider, a conversion table, the emergency page, and a page with a sample line marked for scale. The centre rule is the product. A column too wide turns the page back into ordinary ruled paper.
Specification card for the Shorthand Notebook listing 109 two-column pages at 7.06 mm, 24 lines per page, 120 pages total, A5 trim.
