Six lines run across the page for the strings, and a five-line stave sits above each one. Tablature marks where a finger goes on the neck; the stave above it can carry the same passage in standard notation, or carry nothing at all if the tab is doing the whole job that day.

The pitch is 2.47 millimetres between rule lines, seventy rows down the page, tight enough to fit more than one tab-and-stave pairing on a sheet without wasting it. One hundred and nine pages are ruled this way, plain paper for a working musician with nothing else printed on it.

A riff written down wrong on the tab line is still a riff you can play again badly. The stave above it is there for whoever reads it back later and was not in the room when it was written.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Guitar Tablature Notebook shown as cards: a tab-and-stave page, a section divider, a conversion table, a world map page, and the pen test page.
Five pages rendered straight from the print file: the tab-and-stave pairing, a section divider, the conversion tables, the world map page, and the pen test leaf at the back. Six lines for the strings, five for the stave, printed as vector rules that hold their edge at any zoom.
