Two pages at the front ask for the numbers a pattern usually assumes: yarn, needle or hook, stitches per ten centimetres, rows per ten centimetres, and a note. Nothing is printed there for you to copy. Gauge changes with the yarn, the needle, and the hand holding it, so a number printed in a book would be somebody else's swatch, not yours.
After that, one hundred and six pages are ruled in a grid pitched at five millimetres, thirty-four rows to the page, proportioned for a stitch that sits wider than it stands. A knitted or crocheted stitch is not the square a sheet of maths paper assumes, so charting one on an ordinary grid quietly distorts the picture.
A swatch knit at a different tension will not match a chart built for someone else's hands, which is the entire reason this book asks the question instead of answering it.
