A column of figures added by hand drifts sideways without something to hold it straight. A small diagram drawn freehand does the same thing in two directions at once. Thirty rows of 6.0 mm squares fill the page and hold both still.
That pitch sits between two others on the same shelf: a finer grid built for charting stitch by stitch, and a coarser one built to leave room for a whole word inside a square. Six millimetres is the middle setting, tight enough for a grid of small numerals and loose enough not to fight a pencil line.
The grid does not add the column up correctly. It only keeps each digit under the one above it, so a mistake is at least easy to find.
