Four columns run across the day-book pages: reference, client, scope, quoted amount. That is the whole discipline the book asks of you. Write the reference the moment you send a price, and months later you can find what you quoted for a job without digging through old email.
Twelve lined pages hold what the four columns cannot: the site visit that changed the scope, the client who wanted a number by Friday, the supplier price that moved after you had already quoted. None of it fits in a column, and most of it explains why a job cost more than the reference row said it should.
