A square grid at 4.00 mm sits closer than the usual graph paper pitch, forty-six rows down an A5 page. At that spacing a small technical drawing can carry real proportion. A bracket, a floor plan, a stitch chart: anything where the grid needs to disappear once the drawing is finished with it.
A coarser square grid works fine for a bar chart or a quick sketch. It starts to fight a drawing that needs four or five squares to a real centimetre, because the lines compete with whatever is drawn over them. This pitch gives that kind of work more room before the grid becomes the loudest thing on the page.
