Eight pages at the front hold four columns: colour, code, skeins, where. That is the shopping problem solved before the stitching starts, the exact colour code and the number of skeins written down before a second trip to the same shop for the same thread.
After the daybook, one hundred and two pages are ruled at two millimetres to the square, eighty-seven rows down each page. That pitch is fine enough that a single square can stand for one stitch without the grid crowding out the design underneath it.
A finished piece is read off the chart square by square. A grid that drifts even slightly out of true shows up as a visibly wrong stitch fifty rows later, not as a rounding error nobody notices.
