Every page is split three ways: a narrow cue column down the left, the note area beside it, a summary strip across the foot. Rules sit at 6 mm. A wider pitch looks generous and is not: the Cornell layout already spends the left of the page on the cue column, so ruling the rest at nine millimetres leaves too few rows in the note area to be worth the width.
The layout files the page while you write it. Cues on the left become the questions you test yourself against later. The strip at the foot is where you say in one sentence what the page held, written after the session rather than during it.
The summary strip is the part most people leave blank. It is also the part that makes the other two worth ruling.

What is the Cornell layout?

How wide are the rules?
