Turn to any date and it holds five short entries stacked underneath it, one for each year you keep the book. Nothing about the page changes from one year to the next except what gets written on it, which is the entire use of the format: the same date, read back five times, five years apart.

There is no room for a long entry, on purpose. A handful of lines forces a day down to what actually mattered about it, and a day boiled down that far is easier to read back later than a full page would be.

Nobody finishes a five-year diary by accident. The book supplies the five lines under every date. Showing up to fill them in for five years running is the part no notebook can do for you.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Five-Year Line a Day laid out as cards: a dated page with stacked lines, a ruled notes page, a divider, the owner page, and a reference page.
Five pages taken from the print file: a dated page with its stacked lines, a ruled notes page, a section divider, the front owner page, and a reference page. Reading the same date back after even two years is enough to see what changed and what did not.

Questions

Is it dated?

Yes, printed by the date, running the whole year. It is the one journal on this shelf that is.

What happens after five years?

The book is finished. It was built to hold exactly that many entries under each date, not more.

How much room is there per day?

A handful of lines, deliberately short.

Can I start partway through the year?

Yes. Nothing about the layout assumes you started on the first of the year.

Is there a notes section for longer entries?

A separate run of plain ruled pages, for whatever a five-line entry cannot fit.

With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do.
