Wide ruling gives a large hand room it does not get on the finer pitches on this shelf. Seventeen lines fit the page at 8.73 mm, 11/32 of an inch, against twenty-one at the college pitch.

Fewer lines is not a loss on this ruling. It is the point. A page meant to be read back quickly, or written by a hand that has not yet learned to write small, gets more air around each line and less crowding at the margin.

A wide page fills faster than a narrow one, which some people read as generous and others read as a page that runs out too soon. Both readings are correct at the same time.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 27 seconds: the ruling page and the figures printed on its last leaf. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.
