College rule is an American paper convention fixed at 9/32 of an inch between lines, which comes out to 7.14 millimetres. On this shelf it sits one step coarser than the version at 7.0 mm and one step finer than the version at 8.73 mm. Twenty-one lines fit a page at this pitch.

The A5 edition of the same ruling holds twenty-four lines instead of twenty-one. The pitch does not change between the two trims. The page does.

None of the pitches on this shelf is more correct than the others. A finer one suits a small hand and a dense page. A coarser one suits large handwriting or a page meant to be read back quickly. College sits where it has always sat, in the middle.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 27 seconds: the ruling page and the figures printed on its last leaf. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

The top of a ruled page at close range, showing the horizontal lines and the margin rule crossing them.
Close enough to count the lines.
The front matter page, listing where each part of the book starts and on what page, then the ruling and the signature count, and a short checklist to work through before writing in it.
The front matter states the ruling and the binding before you write a word.
The pen-test leaf: a line reading “Try a nib here before you trust it to a page you care about”, a table with pen, ink and swatch columns, and the book's own figures printed at the foot — lined, 7.1 mm, 21 rows per page, one column.
The same figures the product page quotes, printed inside the book.
