Ninety-six pages, ruled lined, twenty-four lines to a page. No columns down the side, on purpose. A column book is right when every entry needs the same five facts. A machine log is often not that: one day it is a reading, the next it is a smell nobody can place, the day after that it is a bolt that was loose and got torqued back down.

Thirteen pages of plain notes follow the log itself, for anything longer than the running entries: a fault that took three shifts to chase down, a part number worth remembering, a supplier who was slow the last time.

It will not tell you what to check or how often to check it. That schedule belongs to the machine, the manufacturer, and whoever wrote your maintenance plan, none of which a lined notebook can know in advance.

What is inside

Machine log
96pp
Lined, not columned, so an entry can be a word or a paragraph depending on what actually happened.
Notes
13pp
Plain ruled pages for anything longer than a running entry.
Reference
6pp
Pressure and temperature conversions computed from definitions, plus emergency numbers checked against two independent sources.
Last leaf
1pp
A pen-test page, printed on purpose, so the real pages stay clean of it.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Machine Log Notebook laid out as cards: a ruled log page, a section divider, a plain notes page, a conversion table, and the pen test page.
Five pages rendered straight from the print file: a ruled log page, a section divider, the plain notes section, a conversion table, and the pen-test leaf at the back. No columns to force an entry into a box it does not fit. A shift note about a strange noise or a leak that only shows up under load needs a sentence, not a checkbox.
Specification card listing the Machine Log Notebook contents: ninety-six log pages, thirteen notes pages, one hundred and twenty pages total, A5 trim, six signatures of twenty.
Ninety-six pages ruled lined at 7.14 mm, twenty-four lines to a page, open for whatever a shift needs to record: what ran, what was changed, what wants following up before the next one starts. Thirteen further pages of plain notes behind the log. Eleven pages of reference and furniture close it out, one hundred and twenty pages total, A5, six signatures of twenty.

Questions

Does it have ruled columns?

No. It is ruled lined throughout, so an entry is not forced into a fixed set of fields.

How big is it?

A5, 148 x 210 mm, one hundred and twenty pages, 6.86 mm across the spine.

What ruling is the log?

Lined, 7.14 mm pitch, 9/32 inch, twenty-four lines to the page.

Is it dated?

No. Pick it up on whichever shift the machine needs watching.

What is the difference between this and a column-ruled service log?

A column book fixes five or six fields and asks every entry to fit them. This one is open lines, for the entries that do not fit a box.

Who is it for?

Anyone keeping a plant or equipment record where what happened does not always match the same five headings.

The calling of a man's self to a strict account, is a medicine, sometime too piercing and corrosive.
