A chainman calls a reading and a surveyor has about as long as the next sight takes to arrive to write it down correctly. Eight columns fix where each number goes before the sight is called: back sight, intermediate sight, fore sight, rise, fall, reduced level, distance, remarks. Nobody stops to rule a table in the field.

Ninety-six pages carry that table. Behind it sit thirty-three pages of squared paper at 5.0 millimetres, thirty-four rows to the page, for the sketch of the run and the arithmetic that checks it.

The page does not check the reduction for you. It only gives the columns enough room, in the same order every time, so a mistake shows up as a number in the wrong place rather than a number nobody can find.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Level Book shown as cards: cover, divider, an eight-column reduction table page, a squared notes page, and a conversion table page.
Five pages from the print file: the cover, a section divider, a table page with its eight columns, a squared page at 5.0 millimetres, and the conversion table. The columns are the reason to buy this rather than rule an ordinary notebook by hand in the field.
Specification card for the Level Book: eight-column table, squared paper at 5.0 mm, one hundred forty pages total, A5 trim.
