A square grid draws a square with no effort and a hexagon badly. This grid does the opposite. Pointy-top hexagons tile the page edge to edge, sharing a wall wherever two of them meet. A shape built from hexagons reads as one continuous surface, not as a set of lines forced into a hex outline after the fact.
Hex grids turn up wherever a plane needs dividing into cells that touch each other the same way in every direction. A hand-drawn map with consistent movement costs, a beadwork pattern, a stitch count: all of them want a hexagon, not a square. Thirty rows fit the page at 4.94 millimetre pitch, tight enough to hold a detailed map without every cell needing a magnifying glass.
The grid does not care what gets drawn inside it. It holds a hand-drawn map exactly as well as it holds nothing at all.
