One axis on this page does not move at a fixed distance for a fixed step. It moves by ratio, so the space between one line and the next shrinks as a value climbs from one to two and widens again on the approach to ten, before the pattern starts over one decade up. The other axis stays exactly as ordinary as a ruled row ever is, 9.17 millimetres apart, eighteen to the page.

A quantity that grows by doubling rather than by adding a fixed amount runs off the edge of ordinary squared paper within a few steps. Plotted against the log axis instead, the same growth can sit on something close to a straight line, which is the entire reason this ruling exists rather than another sheet of squares.

A straight line on this page is not proof of anything on its own. It is only easier to read than the curve it replaced.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Semi-Log Notebook shown as cards: cover, divider, a semi-log ruled page, a lined notes page, and a conversion table page.
Five pages from the print file: the cover, a section divider, a semi-log page with its crowded and its spread-out lines, a plain lined page, and the conversion table. A curve that bends across ordinary graph paper can sit on a straight line here instead.
Specification card for the Semi-Log Notebook: one log axis, one linear axis, one hundred twenty pages total, A5 trim.
The greater part of the book is ruled with one logarithmic axis and one evenly divided axis, 9.17 millimetres between the printed rows, eighteen to the page, behind a section divider, with a shorter run of plain lined pages at the back. Ten pages of furniture, including conversion tables computed from definitions. A5, one hundred twenty pages total.
