A dot grid does the job of both ruled lines and graph paper without insisting on either. The dots line a row of handwriting up well enough to keep it level. They line a hand-drawn table up well enough to keep its corners square. Neither job needs an actual printed line, which is the whole appeal: nothing crosses the page that would show through the ink.
Thirty rows fit the page at five millimetres. The two A5 notebooks that share this exact grid run to thirty-six rows and thirty-four rows respectively; the margin and heading differ between them, not the dot. The measurement travels; the page around it does not.
A finer four millimetre version of the same grid sits alongside this one, for anyone whose hand runs small. Five millimetres is the more forgiving of the two, and it is the one I reach for myself when a page is going to hold a rough table rather than fine notes.
