A sketch and a caption want different things from a page. The sketch wants room with nothing printed on it to compete for attention. The caption wants a line to sit on so it does not drift. This ruling gives each its own field on the same page instead of making one of them lose.

The ruled strip runs at college pitch, 7.14 mm, the same rule used elsewhere on this shelf. It is there for a label, a measurement, a date, or a few lines explaining what the sketch is meant to show a reader who was not in the room when it was drawn.

The split does not decide how much of the page belongs to which half. That is still a decision made by hand, page by page, the way it always was on plain paper.
