Most squared paper sold for a notebook runs at five millimetres or wider, a spacing an ordinary hand can rule a table inside without the lines closing in on each other. This grid is finer: two millimetres between lines, eighty-seven rows down the page. At that pitch a single square is not much wider than a pencil tip.

The lines are drawn as vector geometry, not laid down as a tiled bitmap, so a square this small still holds a clean edge when the page is enlarged on a screen. Two millimetres is close to the finest pitch a page can hold before two neighbouring lines start to read as one.

It is not a page built for a shopping list. Writing a sentence inside a square this size means writing between the lines rather than on them, and most hands tire of that within a paragraph.

The film

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 52 seconds: the cover, the ruling page, then 5 reference pages. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.

Real pages

Five pages from the Squared Notebook 2 mm shown as cards: a fine grid page, a section divider, a conversion table, a world map page, and the pen test page.
Five pages rendered straight from the print file: the fine grid, a section divider, the conversion tables, the world map page, and the pen test leaf at the back. The grid is vector geometry throughout, so a line this close to its neighbour still holds a clean edge when the page is enlarged.
Specification card for the Squared Notebook 2 mm listing 110 gridded pages, 2.0 mm pitch, 87 rows, 120 pages total, A5 trim.

Questions

How fine is the grid?

Two millimetres between lines, eighty-seven rows down the page.

Is the grid printed as an image?

No, it is drawn as vector lines, so it holds a sharp edge at any zoom instead of softening like a scanned grid.

How big is the book?

A5, one hundred and twenty pages, six sewn signatures of twenty.

Is it dated?

No, so it never expires.

Who is two millimetres too fine for?

Anyone writing full sentences by hand. It suits counting squares more than filling them.

What number may have sunk under them we can never know.
