Twenty-four lines fit this page at the narrow pitch, a quarter of an inch, 6.35 millimetres between rules. It sits one step coarser than the 6.0 mm lined ruling on this shelf, and one step finer than the 7.0 mm version above it.

A tight pitch rewards a small, controlled hand. It punishes a large one immediately: a capital letter that reaches for the line above crowds the row it just left. A coarser pitch would forgive that reach without noticing it.

My own handwriting is too large for this pitch, and I know it every time I use a page ruled this tight. It is still the ruling I reach for when the notes need to be short and the page needs to hold a lot of them.

Page by page

A vertical film from our own bench — this page contacts nobody's server to play it, and downloads nothing until you press play.

A vertical film, 27 seconds: the ruling page and the figures printed on its last leaf. Synthesised ambient bed, no dialogue — captions in three languages.
