Where Our Materials Come From
Leather: From Garut & Magetan
Our leather comes from the well-known tanning centres of Garut and Magetan. We work with suppliers committed to:
- Vegetable Tanning: For vegtan leather we give priority to processes that reduce hazardous chemical waste.
- Animal Welfare: We make sure the leather is a by-product of the local food industry, and that the animals were treated humanely.
- Waste Management: Production waste is treated responsibly and, where possible, turned into a useful by-product.
Paper, Thread, and the Rest
Every component is chosen with care:
- Paper: We are working towards being able to trace our whole paper supply chain back to its source, so that we can be sure of its sustainability.
- Thread: At present most of our thread is still imported, to guarantee the strength of the stitching. We keep looking, though, and are ready to move to a local producer as soon as one meets the quality standard we need.
- Other Components: We always give priority to local artisans for hardware and other supporting materials.
Our Relationships: Friendship, Not Merely a Contract
For us the artisan is the soul of the company, and a supplier is a friend. We build long-term partnerships founded on mutual trust. Where we can, we always choose to pay our vendors and suppliers in advance, to ease their cash flow. That personal relationship is what makes sure every material we receive is not only of good quality, but arrives with good energy and a good story behind it.

What does `hyper-local supply chain` mean for Hibrkraft?
It means we try as hard as we can to source materials, and to work with artisans, from the nearest places in Indonesia. Our first priority is friends and partners we already know, then the local community, and only then a wider search if it is needed. This is how we make sure the money circulates at home and supports the local creative economy.
Why are some materials, such as thread, still imported?
Honesty is one of our core values. At present, for the strength and consistency of stitching that our lifetime warranty rests on, we have not found a local thread that meets those technical specifications. We do keep actively searching and testing local products. If we find one that is equal or better, we will change over at once.
How do you make sure your leather suppliers really are ethical?
We build personal, long-term relationships with our suppliers in Garut and Magetan. We do not simply place orders; we visit and talk with them regularly. We discuss their processes, make sure waste is properly managed, and verify that the leather we use is a by-product rather than the output of an industry focused on hides alone.
What are Hibrkraft's next goals for ethical sourcing?
We have two main goals at present: first, to be able to trace our paper back to the forest or the recycling mill it came from. Second, to find packaging that is 100% plastic-free without compromising the safety of the product in transit. This is a journey of improvement that never really stops.
