The grain direction of the paper is meticulously controlled. If paper is bound with the grain running perpendicular to the spine, it will resist opening and will never lay flat. A machine-fed binder often overlooks this; a craftsman folding signatures by hand ensures it’s correct every time. It’s a small detail that fundamentally changes the user experience.
